Mt 2:1 - Who were the Magi?

I was surprised at the depth and richness of the answer to this question. I am also thankful for people who in their sincerity and faithfulness sought out the depths of scripture to bring God's beautiful truth to light.

According to John MacArthur, Magi is really a tribe name. There were members of an Eastern priestly group, descendant of a tribe of people originally associated with the Medes. They were powerful political people who were King-makers....

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the explanation of the magi history from http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/2182

Christmas just passed and I still remember how Loke and I were doing the models of the Nativity Scene. Much of the scene we know today are really conjured by tradition and artist impressions rather than what was biblical and historical. As I considered the richness of the history being proposed, I couldn't stop to marvel at God's perfect sovereignty throughout history.

The Jews rejected Christ when He came, but God had the magi (Gentiles) to come to His birth and worship Him. Indeed, if we today do not worship God, even the rocks will cry out!
