Mt 1:1-17 The Genealogy

Studying the gospel of Matthew is part of my journey here in Hawaii, so i shall add that into this blog =)

Some gems found in the Genealogy from Mt 1:1-17 (got it from my fav bible teacher of course...)

1) Both Joseph and Mary are descendants of King David! David had 2 sons, Solomon and Nathan. Mt 1 records the ancestry of Joseph. Luke 3 records that of Mary. Talk about perfect timing. Joseph was never referred as the Father of Jesus since Jesus came through a virgin birth.
--> Jesus receives the royal line of David through Joseph, who is from Solomon's line
--> Jesus received the blood line of David through Mary, who is from Nathan's line

2) God ruled with grace. God allowed the names of 4 women to be mentioned in the genealogy in Mt 1. Tamar a harlot (Gen 38), Rahab a harlot (Joshua 2), Ruth - a Moabite, a descendent of incense (Gen 19:30-35), Bathsheba an adulterer (2 Sam 11). Yet Christ came from such a history... to save and redeem sinners...

On the surface, the Genealogy seemed irrelevant and pointless in our culture. however, Matthew dealt an amazing blow to the self-righteous Jewish leaders to prove the royalty of Christ through ancestry when they maintained that Jesus was just a carpenter's son.
