Merrie Monarch 2010 (Hula Competition)

so cool to be in Hawai'i and watching the competition on TV... more info on the http://www.merriemonarch.com/.. apparently you can find the live streaming here:
http://www.k5thehometeam.com/Global/story.asp?S=12245346   3 nights. 6pm to midnights... ^^

My understanding of hula evolved quite a bit since I got here. Before I came here, it was just the stereotype hawaiian girls dancing for tourists. But going through the hawaiian studies class, watching performances, listening and learning from different people, and even doing one for God.. perspectives really changed... to a point i decided not to buy back grass skirts and coconut shells. Hula is such a beautiful part of the culture here that I respect.

Hula itself is story telling. But like any other performing arts, it could be used to express all kinds of ideas, good and bad. Some uses it to worship Pele, the volcano goddness. Some see it as a way to cling on to their native heritage and stir up anti-colonialism among the hawaiians. Yet it could be redeemed to worship God and express the beauties of God's creation.

^^ try to watch the video clips if you can't catch the live stream... my kumu (teacher) says that the girls are pretty... but the guys are really hot! haha... my teacher is a lady... =p hula was indeed done by Men in the beginning...
