In case, u are wondering if I did not have the discipline to follow thru my study of Matthew... well let's just say it's been difficult to set aside that huge amount of time... but each time I rejoice greatly for there's so much to learn and be in awe of...
It is interesting how wrong we got the nativity scene. And it is re-emphasized by how Loke and I actually took a whole Monday to create that inaccurate scene of Christ's birth. Although perhaps the details might not be that critical, but I feel that the details give the full picture of what Matthew wanted to convey.
Things to note (some repeated from earlier posts):
- Matthew did not say how many magi came. it is most likely they came with an army too
- when Jesus was visited by the magi, Jesus was already a few months old and shifted to a house (see 2:11). He is not in that manger anymore!
- the star might not have been a real star but rather something God made to shine forth His glory (as a physics student, i will tell you if a star, full of nuclear fusion, were to get near to Earth, Earth would probably be fried)
It has been an inspiring message. The writing of Chapter 1 and 2 is far from just dumping random information about Christ for fun although that might be what we feel when we glance thru the passage without studying it. Starting from the genealogy, the virgin birth, the visiting of the magi, the plot of Herod, the flight to Egypt were all pointing towards 1 message --> Christ as the rightful King.
I tried to push my mind to think about the detailedness of how God planned and fulfilled all the prophecies stated in Mt 2...I kept hitting a ceiling.. It is just too beyond me to comprehend that intricate and yet delicate cloth of history woven skillfully by no other than the Creator.
The King deserves worship. There are 3 groups of ppl in Mt 2. Herod who rejected Christ and wanted to kill Him, the indifferent scribes and chief priests who are more concerned about their status and political games and the magi who sought and worship Christ.
I am reminded of my King today. May my lifesong sing to You, O Lord my King!
**read Hosea. I was deeply moved by his life story. gosh...!
